Welcome to Class 1 at Winmarleigh, where every child's learning journey begins with excitement, curiosity and a sense of belonging.
Our Class 1 family brings together children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in a happy, nurturing and inspiring environment where everyone is encouraged to Enjoy, Believe and Achieve.
Our mixed-age classroom is a special place where children learn with and from one another, build lasting friendships and grow in confidence and independence. Our older children take pride in being positive role models, while our younger children are inspired by the achievements of those around them.
We believe that every child is unique, with their own talents, interests and potential. Through encouragement, exciting learning experiences and a caring classroom community, we help every child feel valued, develop a love of learning and recognise just how much they can achieve.
Enjoy – Developing a Love of Learning
In Class 1, we believe that children learn best when they are happy, engaged and excited to discover something new.
For our Reception children, learning comes alive through a carefully planned balance of adult-led teaching and child-initiated play. Our stimulating indoor and outdoor learning environments encourage imagination, creativity, exploration and discovery.
As children progress into Years 1 and 2, we build on these foundations through engaging lessons, practical experiences and opportunities to investigate, question and explore.
From outdoor adventures and creative challenges to exciting stories and hands-on investigations, we aim to make learning memorable, meaningful and, most importantly, enjoyable!
Believe – Growing in Confidence and Independence
We want every child in Class 1 to believe in themselves and feel proud of who they are.
Our nurturing, mixed-age environment provides wonderful opportunities for children to develop confidence, independence and resilience. We encourage everyone to have a go, ask questions, share ideas and embrace new challenges, knowing that making mistakes is an important part of learning.
Children learn to support and celebrate one another, developing kindness, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging.
Through positive encouragement and carefully planned opportunities for success, we help our children develop a 'can-do' attitude and the confidence to say, "I believe I can!"

In Class 1, we know that every achievement matters, no matter how big or small.
From writing a name for the first time and reading a first sentence to solving a tricky problem or mastering a new skill, we celebrate the progress and successes of every child.
Our carefully planned curriculum builds strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, alongside exciting opportunities to develop creativity, curiosity and a wider understanding of the world.
We recognise that every child develops at their own pace, and we provide the support, encouragement and challenge they need to make progress, reach their potential and feel proud of their achievements.
A Love of Reading – Opening Doors to New Adventures
Every great adventure begins with a story!
Reading is at the heart of learning in Class 1, and we are passionate about inspiring a lifelong love of books.
We create daily opportunities for children to enjoy stories, discover exciting characters, explore new vocabulary and develop their imagination.
We follow the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) phonics programme, providing a consistent and structured approach to early reading and spelling. Through daily phonics teaching, regular practice and carefully matched reading books, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become fluent readers and writers.
We want our children to enjoy discovering the magic of books, believe in themselves as readers and achieve success as their reading skills grow.
